Dental assistants are predicted to be one of the fastest growing jobs in the country over the next ten years. Dental assistant jobs are predicted to grow by almost thirty percent during this time. The reasons for the boom in dental assistants jobs is varied, but includes an aging population, emphasis on preventative dental care, and a younger crop of new dentists taking over for older retirees all contribute to the explosive growth of job prospects. More clients mean more dentists will need to hire assistants to keep up with the extra work. Most positions are entry level, but faster paced offices may prefer dental assistants with past work experience.
There are around 280,000 dental assistant jobs in the United States. The vast majority of these positions are in dentist offices, but a few are in other medical offices or government locales. Of the work staff, around thirty-five percent was part time while the other sixty-five consisted of full time employees.
