The are numerous options for dental assistant schools. Many community colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools offer courses designed to prepare aspiring dental assistants for the opportunity to work in the dental field. A strong high school background in the sciences is recommended as a starting point. The American Dental Association also offers a number of training programs throughout the country designed to provide adequate resources for dental assistants. Certification is undertaken after this coursework is completed. There are over two hundred and fifty accredited dental assistant training programs in the United States. These include classes, lab work, and practical real world experience with dental equipment and practice. A high school diploma is required to start, and most schools go for six months to one year before completion. Two year schools provide associate degrees.
